MICE IN GEORGIA
In this respect, Georgia as an acclaimed and one of the fastest growing leisure tourist destinations in Europe has plenty to offer in MICE industry.
Nowadays, the main source of supply is hotel conference and meeting facilities. The rise of international upscale and midscale hotel brands in the country will contribute to the development of the MICE sector, especially in Tbilisi and Batumi, in following years.
Nowadays, only Expo Georgia and Sheraton Metekhi Palace Hotel in Tbilisi can host more than 1,000 delegates on an event, making it difficult for the country to host large international conferences, exhibitions etc.. In addition, overnight flights and relatively small number of direct flights impede MICE tourism.
With the capacity of more than 3,000 delegates, Panorama Sololaki Hotel is expected to add the largest convention space to the country’s MICE market. In addition, two large-scaled developments are announced in Tbilisi and Batumi. The large exhibition and meeting venues could induce a new type of demand.
The average annual meeting room occupancy rate in International hotels is higher in Tbilisi than in Batumi, with 32% and 12%, respectively. Whereas, the seat occupancy rate (meeting facility capacity utilization) is 15% in Tbilisi and only 4% in Batumi.
The low occupancy rates indicate underutilization of MICE facilities in Tbilisi and Batumi. Although the number of business trips to Georgia has been growing by, on average, 9% over the past 3 years, the existing supply of MICE facilities is expected to almost double in Tbilisi and Batumi. If the business tourism growth rate doesn’t keep up with the increasing supply, oversupply may occur.
